2. What are the three broad categories of tenses?
Tenses play a crucial role in the English language. It denotes the time an action takes place, whether sometime in the past, in the present or will take some time in the future. Tenses are just the way we talk about time. Tenses can be broadly classified into three categories - Past, Present, and Future.
In each category of tense, there are four different types i.e.
1. Simple
2. Continuous
3. Perfect
4. Perfect Continuous
We will also discuss in detail all the four different types of Future tense:
i) Future Simple Tense
ii) Future Continuous Tense
iii) Future Perfect Tense
iv) Future Perfect Continuous Tense
Future simple tense is used to talk about an action that will occur in the future. This tense is also used to express a wish or a plan or predict the events supposed to take place in the future. It is also used for promises/requests/refusals/offers.
Future Continuous tense is also known as Future Progressive tense.
Future Perfect tense is used to refer to
- an action that will be completed before a specific time in the future (the deadline is there).
- an action that will happen before another action in the future.
Future Perfect Continuous Tense is a tense which is used to talk about the action that will be in progress for a certain period of time at a specific time in the future. Future Perfect Continuous Tense is also used to describe or indicate actions that began in the past and will continue to occur up to a certain point in time in the future.
